Southern Electro-Diesel Locomotives
Line up of three EDLs - left to right 73119, 73109 and 73006
Two JBs, 73119 and 73109 and a JA 73006, three of the Southern Region's most useful Electro-Diesel locomotives. For the uninitiated, these are powerful electric locomotives which also have a small diesel motor and generator so - at reduced power - they can operate away from the electrified system (including sidings where a conductor rail would be considered a safety hazard) and when the power is switched off (such as during engineering works). Headcodes 91 - 93 were appropriately Waterloo and Weymouth via Eastleigh fast, semi-fast and slow, with 93 also being used for Salisbury - Eastleigh via Southampton (unidirectional).

Detail of 73006's underframe
One of the useful things about Open Days is to be able to observe and photograph details at ground level and close up! Above is one side of the underframe of 73006.

Underframe detail on 73119
Above, this detail shot of the underframe of 73119 illustrates the other side of the locomotive. 73119 was displaying headcode 98 on its other end. It is now owned by Knights Rail.
