View over valley from holiday rental

Above is the lovely view from the terrace of our holiday rental cottage at Maen-t-Wrog, between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Portmadog, looking towards Snowdonia. Now those two locations ought to have given me a big clue, but it was not until late one afternoon when I was fiddling with the car that I heard a distant steam whistle and realised just how well placed - and how poorly researched - we were. I looked up to see a Ffestiniog Railway train running on a high ridge the other side of the valley. Thereafter, whenever we were at the cottage I made sure I was out looking when a train in either direction was due. The location in the below photograph is about five minutes (by train) north east of Tan-y-Bwlch. As I only took my compact digital camera on holiday, getting a decent distant photo was not possible.

Unfortunately we did not have time to travel on the Ffestiniog Railway.
