The Class 108 DMUs are named "Spirit of Speyside" and, above, "Spirit of Banffshire". The latter is an atypical pairing of two DMSOs M51568 and M52053. The first departure of the day was delayed by about 10 minutes because the brakes could not be released. This was rectified at the platform end by "impact maintenance". The timetable on the Keith & Dufftown Railway is undemanding and such a delay had no impact on the rest of the day's running. Below, the only remaining station between Dufftown and Keith is at Drummuir, which operates as a request stop, and serves the nearby Castle, village and activity centre. Only the platform remains at Drummuir today. There were also stations at Towiemore (Halt) and Auchindachy. The latter is now a much extended private residence. Both were closed on 1968. |

| Above, the interior of DMSO 52053 and, below, evidence of where this car last operated for BR. It couldn't be much further away on the UK mainland! This pair of cars are leased from Diesel Unit Preservation Associates Ltd based at the East Anglian Railway Museum. |

Above, the train, led by M52053, approaching Keith Town station. Below, I only saw one signal on the railway, this fixed distant being located at the end of the platform at Keith Town station and warning of the buffer stop ahead. The line actually continues half a mile towards Keith (Junction) station - still part of the National Railway Network. The preserved line ends in the goods sidings at the junction, severed from the National Railway Network by the length of two 60ft track panels from the goods sidings' headshunt. Removal of these two panels was a requirement of the late, not lamented, Railtrack for the Heritage line to operate. The by-now Dufftown branch was severed from the National Railway Network in 1998. The preserved railway aspires one day to serve Keith (Junction) station. It is entirely possible there is a fixed distant alerting to the buffer stop at Dufftown Station, though former Brighton Belle Pullman Car 87 is stabled in the platform at Dufftown in advance of the buffers. Maybe there is also a fixed calling-on signal. This line operates with a token between Keith & Dufftown, but it appears to be a "single engine in steam" operation anyway. |
