The station building at Lymington Town is a substantial example of the prevailing LSWR style. Befitting its community and tourist area status the booking hall contains exhibits of local interest and a wealth of information. Above right, the largely empty forecourt on Tuesday 18th May displaying a Wilts & Dorset bus from the adjacent (out of sight to the right) bus garage. The red, white and black with straight lines livery has become a modern classic and variations of it have been displayed for many years, but it is now being superceded by a blue and red curvy line scheme. Below right, a sign in the car park warning that it will be closed for the celebrations on the Saturday, and below left, the celebrations in full swing during the morning of Saturday 22nd May. |

One of the limiting factors on the Lymington branch is the short platform at Lymington Town and with modern regulations only trains of three 20m car lengths can operate here without selective door opening (SDO). This is why the Cig units were reduced to three cars for use on the branch. Interestingly between my Tuesday and Saturday visits new green coloured 2 and 4 car stop boards in the up direction appeared (the down direction remained unaltered) to reflect use from Sunday 23rd May by class 450 EMUs (4 car using SDO) at weekends and class 158 DMUs (2x 23m vehicles) weekdays. The second limiting factor is the electricity supply to the conductor rail, which only has a single fed at Brockenhurst, and the third it being a single track branch with no passing loops. |
