| Once the mainstay of LSWR suburban services, with survivors still with us ultimately thanks to the controversial acquisition by the LSWR of the lightly laid Wenford Bridge Line, the "senior" item of rolling stock on display was an example of the venerable Beattie Well tank, a type introduced in 1862. Well Tank history and pictures from the Southern E-Group. |
| As more powerful locomotives were required for demanding suburban services, the Well Tanks gave way to the Adams Radials - a type unfortunately not on display here - and then Drummond M7s, introduced in 1897. A short-framed example appearing here in the guise of Southern 53, on Saturday 23rd it was on duty giving brake van rides. Note the loco is currently minus its leading driver large splashers incorporating sandboxes. M7 history and pictures from the Southern E-Group. |
