50026 was making its first public apperance for 18 years. Given their years of service working between Waterloo and Exeter the Class 50s can be considered an honourary Southern diesel. Prior to this assignment they had already earned a place in my heart for all the journeys between (takes deep breath before writing) Paddington and Plymouth visiting my wife-to-be (this being before HST125s were introduced on this route). Class 50 history and pictures from the Southern E-Group.
The short-lived Loadhaul Company's livery is totally non-authentic on a Class 50 but it does wear well on this boxy shaped loco. This engine was re-dedicated at the Open Days.
An interesting line-up of powerful type 4 and type 5 locomotives - Western diesel hydraulic D1015 "Western Champion", Peak 45060 "Sherwood Forester", Deltic 55022 "Royal Scots Grey" and 47580 "County of Essex".
I have always been in two minds about the Western Region's two successful diesel hydraulic classes, the Westerns and Warships. On the one hand they are Western so being a Southern man I cannot possibly like them, on the other hand I have a sneaking regard for their individuality!
